Ministries of Worship and Music

Worship and Music

In the city of Memphis and throughout the country, Lindenwood Christian Church has a tremendous reputation for consistent excellence in Music Ministry! You are invited to celebrate some of the most powerful worship experiences of your life -- join the Music Ministries of Lindenwood, make music and worship the Lord!

The Music Ministries of Lindenwood include choirs, concerts and educational programs for young children to mature adults - truly something for everyone! High standards are the norm whether for the Junior King's Choir for 1st and 2nd graders or the professional Chorale. The guiding principal of the Music Ministry is "excellence in all things," and the belief that God deserves only the very best.

Each traditional service at Lindenwood offers a wide musical variety - Bach to bongos, organ and orchestra, and a cappella motets to toe-tapping spirituals. Frequent guest instrumentalists and ensembles including Ryan Anthony and Stan Head with Mid-South Percussion as well as visiting international artists are often a part of worship. Good Friday and Easter Sunday Services are often supplemented by symphony orchestra.

The Golightly Memorial Pipe Organ is heralded as one of the finest organs in the country and can be heard in worship each Sunday at 11:00 am.

The Chancel Choir sings weekly for the 11:00 am Sanctuary Service. Each 3rd Sunday of the month is led by the children and youth: The Jr. King's Choir, The King's Choir and Laudate!

The Wide Open Worship (W.O.W.) service has a reputation as the best in the Memphis area. The worship service is led by Ryan Twisdale and the Wing and a Prayer Praise Team.

History of Music at Lindenwood

From its earliest beginnings, Linden Ave. Christian Church (1843-1954), now Lindenwood Christian Church, has been known for exceptional music. In October 1979, Lindenwood Concerts began its 26-year history, commencing with Metropolitan Opera star (and Memphis native) coloratura soprano Ruth Welting.

For the next 26 seasons many other renowned opera singers, TV personalities, concert organists, acclaimed conductors, various ensembles, orchestras and bands, Miss America, gospel singers, concert pianists, concert violinists, composers, and our own local talent – Joy Brown Wiener, Marguerite Piazza, James (Ol' Man River) Hyter, Ryan Anthony, and many others – truly an array of talent! – have been presented by Lindenwood Concerts.

The new "Music At Lindenwood" series has a different scope. Rather than being a paid, ticketed concert, the new series is free and underwritten by donors (Conductor’s Circle*), with the exception of the Christmas concert, "A Spectacular Christmas!" Another new venture is an annual benefit concert, with proceeds going to a local not-for-profit. MIFA, Child Advocacy Center, Church Health, and others have been recipients of our benefit concerts.

*Conductor’s Circle is for those who want to financially underwrite the “Music at Lindenwood” concert series, at $500 and above. Some have chosen to underwrite a specific concert, while others give a general donation. Members of the Conductor’s Circle also get various perks, such as reserved seating at the Christmas concert, invitations to recitals held to honor the Conductor’s Circle members, names on the back of printed programs, occasional receptions following concerts, and more.
